Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 4

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes dis-, e-, ex-, equi- and sub- as well as the roots -fin- and -terra-.

PREFIXES

The prefix dis- means "not" or "apart". This prefix appears in such words as disapprove or distinguish.

The prefixes e- or ex- mean "out of" or "beyond". We see this prefix in such words as exit or extreme.

The prefix equi- means "equal". One example of its use is the word equality.

ROOTS

The root fin means "end". We see this in such words as final or finish.

The root terra means "earth" or "land". It appears in the word terrain.

Exercise

Instructions: Using what you know about these roots and affixes and the context, determine the meaning of the following bold-faced words.

  1. My friend is an xterra😄 You should know both Ex- and -Terra-. dirt bike racer.

  9. Are Fatburger and Chipotle equidistant😄 = from our school?
  10. California manages emissions😄 How do cars produce SMOG? by requiring periodic SMOG checks.
